It's 1:24 AM. And in the haze, through the exicitement and andicipation, the day has come.

Tonight is opening day for the Boston Red Sox. It is not a day without sadness though.

Theo Epstein has roughly 15 hours to pick up Pedro Martinez's $17.5 million option for 2004, or according to the ace's words his carreer in Boston is over. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but historically as far as the public media is concerned, Pedro has never been called on a bluff and not had the cards in his hand.

To say that I think this is a mistake of incredible levels would be a drastic understatement.

Theo. PICK UP THAT OPTION. $17.5 million is not worth the next DECADE of the club's future. If you do this in you first year you'll cement yourself immediately in history BEHIND Duquette as a Red Sox GM - he let Clemens go but still got a good decade out of him, and ended up losing about another decade or so of near cy young caliber work. You've had Pedro for 3 months - and you're about to lose him.
