Jack blogged again. http://neumega.blogspot.com

It's worth reading, and it's worth responding to.

First, just basic comments - he mentioned that men who are drafted and don't want to kill can serve in other ways, sometimes even in the country. My only thoughts on that are yes, you can - if you're weak of stomach, or weak in general. But in no way feel morally superior to the ground troops. If you're in charge of getting the weapons to the infantry, and the infantry has to kill people, you are equally responsible. See my previous blog for why I think this is a responsibility we have to burden, and I don't accost the armed forces for it - but the footman is not the only one responsible.

As for the drafting of women... fuck it, you know what? I'll be blunt. I haven't been blunt in this blog in a while, and I'm starting to feel a little to socio-political and not real enough.

Ok, requring women to register for the draft - gee, let's think about this. 1) What fucking legislator is going to vote for that, and lose the support of like every woman in his state. 2) SERIOUSLY, HONESTLY, how many women do you know who WANT to be able to be drafted? I sure as hell know more guys who don't want to register than women who might. I can think of maybe like three who I thinkt would probably say it, and when that fucking card comes in the mail I think most of them probably would realize they were just being too gung ho.

Being in the draft fucking SUCKS. The idea that your life can just be snatched away from you with virtually no notice. If a war breaks out that we have to go into.... I may get called. It's not a good feeling.

No woman wants to be drafted, and damn near no women are going to vote to add women to the draft. No legistlator is going to vote for it, and that's the end of that. That idea is going to remain the way it has until the dissolution of the selective service program sometime in the unforseeable future.

Vietnam was OF COURSE a winnable concept. Look at it on paper - superior numbers, superior firepower, by like a DISGUSTINGLY large margin. Vietnam was lost because the US didn't make a point to win it. It was, as Jack said, a shadow war.

This weekend has been so fucking long, so full of things I didn't want to do. Absolutely nothing good happened this weekend.

Oi.
