Couple of things to talk about, the first a point of entertainment to me. The second, more of a theorhetical response.
The first is my Italian class, and what it's developing into. First off, it used to be my least favorite class - in a way it still is because it's the hardest and has the most work and meets the most often, but it's only 24 people and meets in a high school sized classroom Mon-Thurs.... so it really, really feels like a high school class, only it goes a lot faster. My professor has never taught italian before, she just happens to be a native italian speaker - she used to be a french teacher. She's also a pretty -lousy- teacher, easily manipulated, entirely unsure of what she's doing.
My class is entirely comical. To start off on the happy side, there are four girls who are really attractive, all the time. Then there's another more interesting one, Danielle, who is absolutely gorgeous when she smiles, but basically never does that and doesn't talk in class. She's kinda hiding within the class I think. I finally managed to crack her shell today after class when the class did it's usual routine, and hopefully I'll be able to talk to her more.
Yeah, the usual routine though - there are about five primary jokers in the class, myself being one of them, who simply make it their goal to aid the class in its 50 minute degeneration. Our class gets worse and worse on a daily basis - the first 20 minutes will be all work, then we'll find something amusing to talk about, and by the last 20 minutes EVERYBODY is trying to waste time - with us leading the pack. I've taken charge as the belligerant realist who calls everybody - including the professor out when they're full of crap. After she spewed off about 1000 words in 60 seconds to us yesterday whining about something and we all spent that minute looking at each other, getting a general sense of absolute confusion within the room, I just broke in with "... so yeah, I'd like a straw poll of how many people have any clue of what she just said..." and that was the end of all order for the day.
God it's a funny class once all hell breaks loose. Plus it makes Danielle smile.

The other thing - Chris, coaching. I can totally see this. Can you see yourself doing it as a career? As just something you love to do? I really don't know, but I also don't know why you're tying yourself to Colby swimming coaching. Obviously it would be a great place to break in after you've gone through the system, but I don't see why you would have to distance yourself from the guys you swam with. I think the best part about being a member of a really close team is that you're always teammates, whether or not you're still competing together. I'm always going to think of the guys from last season as teammates, even if they're not swimming anymore (I'm not obviously), or if they're swimming with somebody else. That's what a good team is all about. Shit, if you're coaching the team you're still an integral part of the competition anyway - maybe not the part you've got that incredible love for, but still crucial. They'll always be your teammates, and you'll always be theirs.
